She was a British nurse (1865-1915) who worked in Belgium during the First World War. She was known for her humanity, treating the wounded from all sides without discrimination, whether German or Allied soldiers. But more importantly, she secretly helped more than 200 Allied soldiers escape from Belgium through a secret network.
German authorities found out and arrested her on charges of "treason. Despite being a civilian nurse, she was tried and sentenced to death. She was shot on 12 October 1915 in Brussels.
